So, about that fucking wall

I was pleased, and not at all surprised, to see that the GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign, “We The People Will Fund The Wall,” was not successful in raising $1 billion, and so GoFundMe is making them return the money. They’ve set up a 501c4 and are trying to get people to transfer their donations. Douchebags.

When I first read the Business Insider article, they had included a quote from the guy who started the campaign: “Upon seeing the fundraiser’s ‘success…'” They have since removed that hilarious statement, but it was the inspiration for more middle-of-the night research

Everyone that donated will get a refund because the campaign raised just under 2% of the goal in a month. An actually successful crowdfunding campaign (regardless of which site is used) raises 30% in the first week. That means for this campaign to have had the best chance of succeeding, these dip-shits should have raised $300 million in a week (not the $13 million they actually raised.)

They were smart enough to create the campaign…so, why were they not smart enough to use google to figure out how much $1 billion dollars actually is?

And, do they realize cost estimates for this stupid fucking wall are anywhere from $15 billion to $70 billion (with $22 billion being the number lots of folks are running with)?

Compare that to other “similarly priced” line items in the federal budget:
* Protection of biodiversity and landscape (which this wall will impact) = $13 billion
* Disaster Relief = $15 billion
* Dept of Energy = $31 billion (includes major cuts to Science and Environmental Management)
* Unemployment = $33 billion
* International affairs = $38 billion
* Police & Prisons = $42 billion
* Housing = $46 billion
* Food stamps = $83 billion
* Transportation = $94 billion
* Education = $113 billion
* Food & Ag = $140 billion (includes, farming, food stamps, food safety, forestry)

So, dumb-asses raised a lot of money but not nearly enough to accomplish what they wanted, and far less than what it will take to build that wall. Too bad they won’t donate it to support veterans. Or homeless people. Or the sick. Or failing infrastructure. Our our sick environment. Or helping undocumented immigrants gain legal entry into this country.
